In connection with a conference on "Actual challenges of systems and software engineering", the Russian Chapter of SEMAT arranged a full-day workshop at MESI university in Moscow on June 7, 2013. The workshop was attended by about 50 people – both academics and practitioners. Ivar Jacobson gave a talk about SEMAT history, current achievements and future plans. Andrey Bayda, a member of the Russian chapter, presented Essence and its path to become an OMG standard.
In particular, Anatoly Levenchuk, chairman of the INCOSE Russian Chapter, presented how Essence may be applied in the systems engineering realm, not just in software engineering. Concrete proposals are expected by the end of 2013.
Using Essence in education was also discussed. Essence has already been used in various software engineering and systems engineering courses at several Moscow universities and in the industry for trainings of practitioners. The feedback from the course authors is very positive – using Essence in education was reported as efficient and beneficial. Plans to include Essence in the national university programs for software and systems engineering were suggested.
The most exciting idea was presented by Alexander Giglavy. He suggested to educate the core Essence ideas to teenagers at school, something he was considering to do as responsible for science in the Moscow lyceum 1533.
